Sam Auto-bio
In the past several years I have made a return to writing and performing music after focusing for many years on a career of teaching internal martial arts.
My musical journey has seen a lot of starts and stops. I had no real musical training as a child but my father occasionally wrote poems— this influence led me to write lyrics. Writing and playing music for me were originally ways to support the lyrical aspect of song. My musical interests lay primarily in the field of songwriting. I find myself drawn to the naked song at its most basic level.
Initially, I had no ambition to perform music, however, I always wanted to write for other artists and I’ve been gratified over the years to hear my tunes and words come out the mouths and instruments of several incredible musicians.
As far as my own performing goes, I have worked mostly in solo, duo and trio formats. I toured and recorded as a duo act with Christine Duncan in the late 90’ and, in 1999, joined Michael Friedman and Mark James Fortin to form a trio called FFM. Another duo project was 'Blue Manifesto' with jazz drummer Bobby Kapp. During the time I lived in Germany, I performed and recorded with guitarist Thomas Hopf and with jazz-jam buddies sometimes performing as 'Sam Masich Berlin Band.'
Just as song writing has led me to performing, it has also led me to producing. Over the years I’ve managed to fit several projects into my schedule as a producer ranging from sparse simple albums such as Scott Katz’s 'WRONG' to larger scale undertakings like 'Coming Home: Christine Duncan at Christ Church Cathedral,' a nationally broadcast concert/documentary featuring Christine Duncan. I also produced 'Cow!' by folk-noire artist Aldous Orwell.
I also sporadically teach guitar and songwriting and have been on faculty at the Georgia Straight Guitar Workshop and the Moveable Music School. I enjoy teaching and am always looking for new ways to communicate musical ideas.
I still haven’t recorded my quintessential solo album. As the great sage said, “Don’t die with your music still in you.”
